In Christ Alone

November 13, 2005

I'm fairly certain that I have a new favorite worship song: "In Christ Alone". Strange, because I don't think I could picked a favorite before this. The song has been around since 2001 (at least that's what the copyright says), and I heard it for the very first time last night. The poetry of the lyrics is beautiful, as is the melody. Here are the lyrics:

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe
This Gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid, here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay, light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day, up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory, sin's curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand
'Til he returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I'll stand

A very moving version of this song is done by Travis Cottrell and is available on his CD "Alive Forever" available here.

This is my favorite worship song! But I rarely hear it sung in worship services. I actually found it in worship songbook a few years ago, picked it out on the piano, and then decided it was my fav. before I ever heard anyone else perform it…you’ve reminded me that I need to find that songbook!

Even I had heard the song before. I hope that doesn’t bother you too much. But yes, it’s a great song.

Thanks a heap for the lyrics; I hope to make this song my anthem because it wraps up all I have to say about my faith.
