ELCA approves “Human Sexuality: Gift & Trust”

The 2009 Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) adopted “Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust” with a vote of 676 (66.67 percent) to 338 (33.33 percent) on Aug. 19. The passing of the social statement on human sexuality required a two-thirds vote.

I'm not a big fan of cheering … for better or worse, we're a church divided, and while the statement was approved, it also showed how divided we are.

Good point, Chris. I personally think that every denominational church body, regardless of their "official stance" on GLBT issues, is "divided" at the congregational level. The passing of this social statement simply gives members/congregations something concrete to be for/against. What do you think?
