Sermon: “The Story of Your Life”
Below is the outline of the sermon I’m preaching at church tomorrow (People reading in a feed reader: you can find it here). The gospel text is Matthew 16:21-28. I’m going to try to get some audio tomorrow, and if I’m successful I’ll update this post with the sound file. Here’s the mp3 of the sermon if you’d like to download it, otherwise just click “play” below.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
I would love any feedback you have, so please, leave a comment!
FYI, the blog post of Tony Steward’s that I mention in the sermon is located here.
As a side note, I’m not thrilled with the title of the sermon, but that’s what I sent off to be printed on bulletins before I had finished writing. Oh well.

The outline looks good man. I think you could help people reflect on the fact that in life story there are little changes that lead into the big moments of our lives. The Schweitzer is a big change, but it was gotten to through the positive habits in his life that were Christ centered. Then the illustration from my post (which I’m humbled that you are using) could point out that we don’t need to move to Africa to have a different story. We can start on the small but significant things that are easy for us to come up with.
It is not hard to know that you need to communicate better with your spouse, or even to pray with them. But if you put that into practice, then God would be able to speak into your marriage and family in a new way – and who knows what amazing and meaningful things could come of that…
I like it!
My only suggestion and it is coming probably too late is to draw from supporting scripture that supports application steps you are challenging people with.
Otherwise, looks good man. Is this your first sermon in “big church”?
Amazing! I read it twice.. we’ll chat later about the three things I can do after you’re up from your nap. See you soon! I’d like to hear the audio/some kind of recording if you have one too in the future.
I am glad I am following you. It is heartwarming to meet Jesus lovers.
If you truly believe in devine intervention, the title is not from your heart, it was chosen for this sermon already, it is the Holy Spirit at work here and not men. I have started on this journey of my life, in my case I came from Africa, and it looks like my story is about to take shape. I am staying on my knees as this is the very first time in my life that the gospel is significantly shaping the story of my life, not that it was not doing so in the past.
Great Story, very simple and easy to follow.
